Warm Autumn in Xiamen

If you live in north or central China, you would experience a little bit cold from now on because China’s autumn has approached. The cold air would strike China once in a while. Besides the autumn landscape of turned color leaves, there is another holiday destination which can be considered. To escape from the coldness of autumn, you can choose a coastal city like Xiamen.

Xiamen is located in southeast China’s Fujian Province. Being not the capital city, but it still owns very high reputation. Xiamen was one of the earliest ports which were opened to the foreign business. The connection between Xiamen and Taiwan is also very close.

Owning excellent location, Xiamen soon becomes a developed city and a popular destination among travelers. Xiamen is called “Ludao” in Chinese, meaning “EgretsIsland” because of the hundreds of thousands of egrets inhabiting there. This is due to the beautiful natural scenery, the fresh air and the clean environment of the city. Actually Xiamen city town is an island. The city surrounds the city and the city looks like a pearl which shines in the center.

Xiamen is famous for its attractive seascape. As one of the forerunners of the special economic zones of China, Xiamen mainly consisting of XiamenIsland, GulangyuIsland, the north bank area of the JiulongRiver and Tong’an County, is connected with the mainland by the Gaoji Seawall, XiamenBridge, etc. Xiamen is an ideal tourist destination with mild climate especially when most part of China starts to enter autumn and winter. There are abundant tourist attractions such as islands, mountains, temples and parks, etc, providing you with a full sightseeing schedule.

The well-known Gulangyu Island, Nanputuo Temple and other tourist areas like Jimei, Wanshiyan, etc. are highly recommended. A sea tourist line is also available for you to enjoy the amazing scenery of many beautiful small islands around.

Gulangyu Islet is located southwest of Xiamen City. Visitors can reach it by steamship from XiamenCity in about 5 minutes. Gulangyu Islet is renowned for its delicate natural beauty, its ancient relics, and its varied architecture. When the tide comes in, the waves pound the reef and it sounds like the beating of a drum. The Islet came to be named ‘Gulang’. Gu in Chinese means ‘drum’, and Lang, ‘waves’. Breathing the clean air, appreciating the ever-present green trees and lovely flowers, anyone here can feel like they are in heaven. With classical and romantic European-style architecture, the Islet truly deserves to be called the “ArchitectureMuseum”. The Islet Ring Road, which circles the Islet, allows you to fully enjoy all the sights of this small, charming Islet. Among the many scenic spots on the Islet, the most attractive are Sunlight Rock and the Shuzhuang Garden.

South Putuo Temple is an ancient temple with great fame in Xiamen. It has the name of Southern Putuo for the reason of its main conformity to Guanyin and Bodhisattva as well as its location to the south of Putuo Mountain, one of the four great Buddhist fields in Zhoushan of Zhejiang province.

XiamenUniversity, one of the top universities in China, is just beside South Putuo Temple. With a long history and fabulous landscape, it has become a tourist attraction for travelers. The architecture in the campus is very traditional with typical south China styles. There is a tunnel inside the campus where many students visit and draw scrawls on the walls. Walking south out of the university you will soon arrive at the beach called “Xiada Baicheng”.

There are various options for accommodation in Xiamen. A lot of hostels and personal residents were built recent years. You can experience the feeling of living like a local. The particular local dishes and snacks are very appealing to visitors such as Tu Sun Dong, Peanut Soup, and Spring Roll. Zhongshan Road is a place you can not miss during the trip.
